The Palca District is a district municipality in the Tarma Province ( Junín Region ) in the Peruvian Central Cordillera . The town of Palca , the administrative seat of the district, lies at an altitude of 2740 m in the narrow valley of the Río Tarma . The nearest major cities are Tarma , 25 km upstream in a south-westerly direction, and San Ramón , 50 km downstream in a north-easterly direction. The distance to the Peruvian capital Lima in a south-westerly direction is about 250 km.
The total area of the district municipality is 378 km². At the exit of Palca, the Río Palca Vado flows into the Río Tarma.
The word "Palca" comes from Quechua and means "estuary" or "confluence".
population
In the village of Palca itself there were 2,724 inhabitants at the 2017 census. Palca are politically assigned to 17 to 35 other municipalities, depending on whether the municipality, cooperative or church structure is used, with a total of 5543 people (2017 census). The population development is decreasing. In 1993 the population was 7,662, in 2007 it was 6,415.
The upper class in Palca itself is of Spanish origin, the majority of the population in the villages up to 45 km away are Indians , whose mother tongue is Quechua and who speak only a little Spanish.
history
The village of Palca was founded in 1778 as a fortress by the Spanish conquerors, with which they tried to defend themselves against the Indians coming from the tropical forest under the leadership of the Inca Atahuallapa .
economy
More than 90% of the inhabitants live from agriculture. There are no craft or industrial companies. The main product of agricultural cultivation is the potato. Of the total area of the district parish, 52% is owned by the cooperative , the rest is privately owned or in the hands of cooperatives . The proportion of the forest in the total area is very low at 1.6%.
The main elements of the community are the cooperatives, the Comunidades Campesinos , whose organizational structure dates back to the Inca era and which are characterized by a great understanding of democracy.
Infrastructure
Palca has a primary school, a middle school, a church community center, an infirmary with doctor, dentist and midwife, a community canteen and pharmacy, a market hall, a slaughterhouse and a power supply system.
