The Río Tarma is the approximately 88 km long headwaters of the Río Chanchamayo in central Peru , in the provinces of Tarma and Chanchamayo in the administrative region of Junín .

River course

The Río Tarma rises in the Andean highlands of the Tarma province at an altitude of 4400  m , 19 km southeast of the city of Tarma . Initially it flows mainly in a northerly direction, later in an easterly direction to Tarma. Sections of it are named Quebrada Achalay , Quebrada Chuyoli , Quebrada Durasnioj and Quebrada Mullucro . At river kilometer 60 the river passes through the city center of Tarma. In the urban area of Tarma, the river is canalized. The Río Tarma then flows mainly in a north-easterly direction, cutting through the Peruvian Central Cordillera . He passes the small town of Acobamba and the municipality of Palca . It takes in the tributaries of the Río Palcamayo (from left) and Río Ricran (from the right). Then there is a cascade of hydropower plants along the course of the river, so that this section carries very little water. At river kilometer 29 the Río Huasahuasi flows into the river from the left. Three kilometers above the mouth, the Río Oxabamba meets the Río Tarma from the left. This finally reaches the city of San Ramón , where it joins the Río Tulumayo to the Río Chanchamayo. The catchment area of the Río Tarma covers an area of about 3670 km². In the west it borders on the catchment area of the upper Río Mantaro and its headwaters ( Junín Lake ).

Hydropower plants

The hydroelectric power plants Carpapata I (5.6 MW), Carpapata II (5.9 MW), Carpapata III (12.8 MW), Yanango (43 MW) and La Vírgen (84 MW) are located on the Río Tarma . The Huasahuasi I (9.9 MW) and Huasahuasi II (10 MW) hydropower plants are also located on the tributary of the Río Huasahuasi .
