The district of Zarumilla is located in the province of Zarumilla in the Tumbes region in the extreme northwest of Peru . The district was founded on January 12, 1871. In the 2017 census, 21,776 inhabitants lived in an area of ​​113.25 km². In 1993 the population was 7,977, in 2007 16,058. The administrative seat is the provincial capital Zarumilla with 21,409 inhabitants (as of 2017). The national road 1N ( Panamericana ) crosses the district.

Geographical location

The district of Zarumilla is located in the northeast of the province of Zarumilla. The Río Zarumilla flows into the Pacific Ocean in the north of the district . There is the national reserve Los Manglares de Tumbes ( Santuario nacional Los Manglares de Tumbes ). In the north, the Canal de Capones strait separates the district from the canton of Santa Rosa in the Ecuadorian province of El Oro . In the northwest, the Zarumillas district has a 12.5 km long coastline along the Pacific coast. The Zarumilla district is bordered to the east by the district Aguas Verdes and the southwest by the district Papayal .
