Dmitri Ivanovich Sokolov ( Russian Дмитрий Иванович Соколов * 1788 in St. Petersburg , † November 19 . Jul / 1. December  1852 greg. ) Was a Russian mineralogist , geologist and university professor .

Life

Sokolow came from a poor family of craftsmen. His father was a locksmith at the St. Petersburg court. When Sokolov was eight years old, his father died. His mother managed to place him in the cadet class of the St. Petersburg Mountain Corps boarding school in 1796 with a state scholarship . After graduating from the cadet class with distinction (small gold medal and books), he became a student in the mountain corps. The main subjects were French , German , mineralogy , geology , chemistry and mining science . The mineralogy was taught by Vasily Michailowitsch Severgin . In 1805 Sokolow graduated with the Grand Gold Medal and the title Shift Master . He then prepared for the teaching office there. One of his teachers was Evgraf Ilyich Metschnikow . He also worked in the Mineralogical Museum of the Mountain Corps.

1809 Sokolow was Berggeschworner and lecturer in the mining sciences of the Bergkorps. In 1817 he was a founding member of the Imperial Mineralogical Society. In 1823 his work on ore sands appeared. Further technical articles in mining science followed. From 1825 he published the Gorny Journal , in which he published his scientific work.

In addition to his teaching activities in the mountain corps, Sokolow became a professor at the Chair of Mineralogy and Geology at the University of Saint Petersburg in 1822 . In the 1830s, he led the work of studying the geology of the Urals . Sokolow was the first to classify the red-colored sediments , the Rotliegend , in the Transvolga region in an independent system that Roderick Murchison named Perm in 1841 . In 1833 he received half the Demidow Prize . In 1839 he became a member of the Russian Academy . In 1844 he left the university with the rank of major general .
