history

The first settlers settled in the area at the end of the 18th century , but it was not until a post office was opened in 1868 that the place was given the name Doaktown . This also honored the most active settler Robert Doak, who came from Ayrshire in Scotland . Robert Doak was also the founder and owner of numerous sawmills , water mills and flour mills and a major employer in the area. In the years that followed, the wood industry remained an important branch of the economy. In addition, tourism is gaining influence, as many anglers come to Doaktown because of the abundance of salmon ( Salmo salar ) in the Miramichi River. Because of its central location, the place is sometimes referred to as the Heart of the Miramichi River Valley (heart of the Miramichi River Valley ). Nearby there is a footbridge over the river. There is also a Salmon Museum in Doaktown .
