action

Marcello is a quiet dog hairdresser who lives in Magliana near Rome. He works, loves his daughter Alida and has peaceful relations with his neighbors. But he also trades cocaine to supplement his income. One of his clients is Simoncino, a violent former boxer who steals and terrorizes his surroundings. Marcello occasionally receives a small share of its booty.

One day Simoncino found out that Marcello's shop was adjacent to a jewelry store and he suggested that Marcello break a hole in the wall and rob the neighboring shop. However, Marcello does not want to put his friendship with the other neighbors at risk. Simoncino forces him to hand over the key, clears the shop and the next day the police arrest Marcello because the evidence speaks against him. Since he doesn't want to whistle on Simoncino, Marcello has to go to jail .

Marcello is released a year later, but his neighbors blame him for the shop robbery and want nothing to do with him. His business is now worse. Simoncino is in no way grateful for Marcello's loyalty and has spent all the money - including Marcello's share - on a motorcycle. Marcello is now less willing to give in and because Simoncino denies him his share, Marcello dented his motorcycle. The next day, Simoncino beats and humiliates him in front of all the neighbors. Now Marcello seeks revenge.

A few days later, Marcello told Simoncino that he had met drug dealers and that he wanted to rob them in his shop. He asks Simoncino to help him with his plan and he can then keep a large part of the stolen drugs. In the store, Marcello persuades Simoncino to hide in a cage and then surprise the drug dealers. When Simoncino is in the cage, Marcello locks the cage and tells him that there is another plan and that this time Simoncino will be the humiliated one. Wild with rage, Simoncino manages to break open the cage. Marcello knocks him down with an iron bar. When Simoncino regains consciousness, he tries to strangle the dog barber. While trying to break free, Marcello strangles the former boxer with a dog chain.

To make the corpse disappear, he drives it to the beach and wants to burn it there. Then he extinguishes the flames again and wants to show his neighbors that he has freed them from Simoncino. But all the neighbors have disappeared and left him alone.

criticism

"The impressive character study doesn’t save with ridicule and irony and uses elements of film noir to create a ghostly picture of the crisis-ridden country."
