The Dolphin IV was in 1979 between Florida and the Caribbean inserted cruise ship , the 1956 line passenger ship under the name Zion was put into service. The Dolphin IV remained in service until September 2000 and was scrapped in India in 2003 .
history
The Zion was built in the Deutsche Werft in Hamburg . It was a reparation payment from the Federal Republic of Germany to Israel and was therefore also built at the expense of the German government. The delivery to Israel and the commissioning on the route from Haifa to New York took place in 1956. The Zion operated by the shipping company ZIM Lines had an identical sister ship with the Israel .
In 1966 the ship was sold to Portugal under the name Amelia De Melo and used there by the Sociedade Geral de Commercio between Lisbon , West Africa and the islands in the Atlantic ( Madeira, among others ). After the independence of former Portuguese colonies, the service ceased in 1971.
In 1972 the Amelia De Melo went as Ithaca to an owner in Greece who had it converted for cruise operations. The ship, now operated by the Ulysses Line, offered trips in the Mediterranean and was marketed by Thomson Cruises in Great Britain between 1973 and 1976 .
In 1979 the Ithaca was renamed Dolphin IV and was in service between Florida and the Caribbean. In 1984 the ship went to the Dolphin Cruise Line, which was founded especially for this purpose and which later expanded with other cruise ships from the 1950s. After the merger of the Dolphin Cruise Line with Festival Cruises in 1997, the Dolphin IV was sold in 1998 and from then on operated by the Cape Canaveral Cruise Line on the same routes.
After technical problems, the Dolphin IV was retired in September 2000 after 44 years of service. In 2003 the ship was scrapped in Alang, India .
