Domenico Gargiulo
Domenico Gargiulo (also Micco Spadaro called * 1609 / 1610 in Naples , † about 1675 in Naples) was an Italian painter of the Baroque from the School of Naples . He mainly painted landscape and history pictures .
life and work
Little is known about Gargiulo's life. He was allegedly the son of a sword sweeper , which is why he performed under the name Micco Spadaro. He was a student of Aniello Falcone , who also taught Andrea di Leone and Salvator Rosa . He learned life drawing from Antonio Vaccaro .
In Naples, Gargiulo is considered to be the main representative of the large format staffage picture . For his event pictures, he chose fabrics with which he could set large crowds in a scenic or architectural setting, such as B. in the uprising of Masaniello (1647), the topographically reproduced streets and squares of Naples . In addition, battle pictures, popular amusements and other crowd scenes were created. His early works were influenced by Paul Bril and Filippo Napoletano . His main work is the frescoes of the Certosa di San Martino in Naples (1638–1656), which show representations from the history of the Carthusian Order .
Although Gargiulo was very productive as an artist, few of his works can be found in public collections today. Because he worked a lot for private clients, most of his pictures are still in private hands.
