Dominik Schmitt (born October 4, 1983 in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse ) is a German artist. His work mainly includes painting and video, but also sculpture, drawing, installation, music and poetry. Thematically, he deals with subjectivity as well as questions about art and its terminology. Schmitt lives and works in Landau in the Palatinate and Karlsruhe.

Life

Schmitt lived with his parents and brother in Haßloch and later in Neidenfels in Rhineland-Palatinate . The interest in drawing began in childhood. In 1989 the family moved to Lambrecht , where Schmitt grew up and from 1994 attended the Käthe-Kollwitz-Gymnasium in neighboring Neustadt an der Weinstrasse . At the age of 17, in 2000, Schmitt first took part in a group exhibition in an old factory building in Lambrecht. After graduating from high school, Schmitt began studying fine arts and art history , biology and educational sciences at the University of Koblenz-Landau in the winter semester 2005/2006 . Under the direction of the lecturer Günther Berlejung , he began to develop his style. He paused a few semesters through grants, exhibitions and his film work (from 2010). In 2013 he graduated with the first state examination. In the same year he re-enrolled, in order to take his exams consecutively to expand to the master's degree . He graduated in 2015, but did not become a teacher.

Painting / drawing

As a child, Schmitt began to create an extensive collection of very different drawings. At the age of 16 he experimented with acrylic painting on wood. In 2001 he caused a stir for the first time with his painting "September 11th", which was purchased by the Lambrecht Association. In the apocalypse exhibition of the Kunstverein Neustadt in the Saalbau Galerie he showed his first large painting on wood "the last day". The picture shows a vision in which hundreds of people are killed by angels and their children are robbed.

Due to the new space available from 2005 in the studio of the University of Koblenz-Landau and the various influences during his studies, he developed his own style around 2008 by increasingly starting to thematize himself and his environment through animals and his own symbols. Schmitt himself dates this phase to summer 2009 and calls it “self-birth”, which he also uses as the title for some exhibitions, pictures and texts. According to Schmitt, the term means one's own birth in the world of images / in art. This motif continues in his work and intensifies until he depicts his own naked body. The combination with the attribute "saint" shows on the one hand criticism of religion and at the same time its reflection as a moral authority with exchanged protagonists and alienated or own themes. In 2010, works by Schmitt were removed from two exhibitions due to religious provocation.

Movie

In 2010 Schmitt published his first pixilation short film on the subject of his pictures: Placenta . This consists of 6,000 photos and shows Schmitt himself in a bizarre plot surrounded by animals that are known from his paintings. The film wins several prizes and will be shown at an international short film festival in the Kunsthalle Mannheim and in 2011 in the Istanbul Modern Museum of Contemporary Art . In the same year he also began to animate paintings and drawings using the stop-motion technique. In November 2012 he published his first animated film Paradigma , made up of over 10,000 painted individual phases. The film also deals with the theme of his painting in seven chapters and a prologue. Since 2012, Schmitt has been animating stage sets for befriended bands, music and cultural events in his painting-stop-motion style.
