history

The Dominikus-Zimmermann-Gymnasium was founded in 1878 as a four-course secondary school after King Ludwig II of Bavaria gave the impetus. Initially around fifty boys were taught by seven teachers. By 1896, the DZG was expanded into a six-level secondary school, which led to a higher school leaving certificate. After a student home was built on the Landsberger Schlossberg in 1905, the number of students increased significantly. Since 1919 girls have also been allowed to attend school.

In 1938 the Realschule became an Oberrealschule and the students could now obtain the general university entrance qualification. In 1954, due to a lack of space, the school left the building that is now the City Museum and moved into the new building in Lechstrasse. In 1965 the school got its current name and grew to over 1,400 students by 1975. This led to the school division in 1976: The DZG moved into the newly built school center on Platanenstrasse, which it shares with the Johann-Winkelhofer-Realschule , while the newly built Ignaz-Kögler-Gymnasium stayed in the old building in the city center.

Surname

The school takes its name from Dominikus Zimmermann (1685–1766), a well-known plasterer and builder of the Bavarian Rococo . He designed numerous buildings in Landsberg, including the town hall and the Johanneskirche, and was mayor of Lechstadt from 1748 to 1753.

Foreign language sequence

The first foreign language for every student is English . From the sixth grade onwards, Latin or French are chosen. In the eighth grade there is a separation between the scientific-technological and the linguistic branch. The third foreign language in the linguistic branch is French or, more recently, Italian . In the nine-year high school, Italian is only offered as a late-beginning foreign language from the 11th grade. However, this offer expires with the first year of the eight-year high school.

Additional offers

The DZG offers additional activities: orchestra, large choir, lower school choir, mountain biking, basic course in dramatic design, theater group for lower and intermediate school, textile work and handicrafts as well as various sports courses. In the Bavarian State Final of the Mountain Bike Championships 2008 in Waldaschaff , the school team reached 8th place. Exchange trips with various schools in the USA, France and the Netherlands also take place annually.
