Don Martin (comic artist)
Don Martin (born May 18, 1931 in Paterson (New Jersey) , † January 6, 2000 in Miami ) was one of the most popular cartoonists of MAD magazine .
From 1955 onwards he drew his figures with the characteristic long chin and bent toes for Mad and created a number of onomatopoeia . He was considered a master of illustrated slapstick and black humor . Again and again, there are pop-cultural and literary references such as in King Kong and the transformation of Franz Kafka .
When Don Martin separated from the American MAD in 1987 after a dispute with his publisher William M. Gaines over royalties and went to the competition Cracked , both the American and the German MAD got into a serious crisis, which both editions tried to compensate by the fact that they employed draftsmen who imitated Don Martin's style. But these never had comparable success. Even new editions of the German MAD still contain reprints of Don Martin's old cartoons.
Don Martin died on 6 January 2000 to cancer . He was married with a son and a grandson. His brother was the jazz pianist Ralph Martin .
Individual works by Don Martin were exhibited in Berlin in 2008.
