Donald R. Heath

Donald Read Heath (born August 12, 1894 in Topeka , Kansas , † October 15, 1981 in Orinda , California ) was an American journalist and diplomat .

Life

Heath was born in Topeka. He completed his academic training at Washburn College . He also studied one semester in Montpellier . From 1917 to 1919 he served in the US Army.

After a brief stint as a newspaper correspondent for the White House , Heath joined the US State Department in 1920 . He held several consular posts in Europe. After World War II , Heath was the director of political affairs for the US occupation authorities. From 1947 to 1950 he was the United States' Ambassador to Bulgaria , until he was declared a persona non grata there, which resulted in the break in diplomatic relations between the two countries.

In the 1950s, Heath was ambassador to Indochina and campaigned for the United States to become more involved in the region.

From 1955 Heath was used as an ambassador in the Arab region. He was ambassador to Lebanon , the Kingdom of Yemen and Saudi Arabia . Heath retired from the diplomatic service in 1961. After his retirement he worked as a professor at the University of California in Los Angeles .
