The Donbass Arena ( Ukrainian Донбас Арена , Russian Донбасс Арена ) is a football stadium in the Ukrainian industrial city of Donetsk and home of the top club Shakhtar Donetsk . It was opened on August 29, 2009 and hosted the 2012 European Football Championship . The stadium is currently closed.

history

The arena was designed on behalf of Rinat Akhmetov by the British company Arup , which was already responsible for the Allianz Arena in Munich and the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium in Barcelona . The construction was carried out by the Turkish company ENKA İnşaat ve Sanayi A.Ş. as general contractor. Construction began in 2006 and was completed in summer 2009. The main building materials used were steel and concrete, and glass for the outer facade. There is also a football museum on site. The Donbass Arena has been classified with 5 stars by UEFA .

As trees had to be cleared for the construction of the Donbass Arena, a park was created around the stadium and new trees were planted. In addition to sporting events, the stadium will also serve as a venue for concerts and shows. National and international celebrities from politics and entertainment such as Yulia Tymoshenko and Viktor Yushchenko were present at the opening ceremony . The American R&B singer Beyoncé made a guest appearance on August 29, 2009 as part of her I Am… tour .

In front of the arena is the world's largest "floating" granite soccer ball. This stone ball is composed of several black and light hard stones and slides on a wafer-thin film of water. The stone ball has a diameter of 270 cm and a weight of 28 tons. It was set up in 2009.

In August 2014, the stadium was damaged by two explosions during fighting related to the crisis in Ukraine . A nearby electricity station was also affected. It had already been decided beforehand that Shakhtar's home games would be played in the Lviv Arena in the 2014/15 season . The trophies and exhibits on display in the Schachtar Association Museum have been moved to a safe place. On October 20, 2014, the Donbass Arena was badly damaged by explosions; Parts of the glass facade collapsed due to pressure waves . Parts of the support structure of the remaining parts of the facade were raised by 20 to 30 centimeters, and by comparing the images from the surveillance cameras, it was also found that the facade began to give way in the course of the following day. In order to prevent further parts of the facade from collapsing, safety measures were taken on the girders immediately.

In August 2014, a logistics center for relief supplies for the population of the Donbass region was set up in the stadium's catacombs, which is financed by the oligarch and Shakhtar president Rinat Akhmetov .

In December 2015, Ukrainian media reported that Shakhtar was planning to return to the Donbass Arena. The repair of the damage began at the beginning of 2016. Due to the conflict, the work is only progressing slowly; at the end of May 2018, the lawn was completely restored.

network technology

60 kilometers of fiber optic and more than 400 kilometers of copper cables were laid in the stadium . With 6000 copper and over 1700 fiber optic connections, this is one of the largest networks ever installed in Ukraine .

European Football Championship 2012

During the European Championship, a total of five games were played in the Donbass Arena with three preliminary rounds, a quarter-final and a semi-final.
