Donkey Republic is a Danish public bike rental system that was founded in 2014 and is now (as of May 2019) active in more than 50 cities in Europe.
history
The company was founded by Erdem Ovacik from Copenhagen in 2014. At first he only set up bicycles for his friends in the Danish capital. These were secured with combination locks. The choice of name (donkey, on dt. Donkey) seeks a bicycle than on the popular paraphrase bike from. Finally, after 2015, the mechanical security was replaced by an electronic one that was easy to operate. The demand outside of the Freundeskreis grew, even though many residents in Copenhagen and other Danish cities have their own bikes. But for guests this is an environmentally friendly and quickly available means of transport. In the meantime, a team of 22 young people takes care of the marketing and, in cooperation with competent representatives on site, also takes care of the care and maintenance of the vehicles. To use it, the interested party must download the mobile app in advance and register. For quick processing, registration can be done via the Facebook account, because Facebook is used worldwide. A binding data protection declaration applies to all registered users, according to which no personal data is passed on.
The company's franchising concept has been contributing to the wider distribution of rental bikes since 2016 .
