Donna is a city in Hidalgo County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

geography

The city is located on US Highway 83 in the southeast of the county, in southern Texas, about 80 km to the east from the Gulf of Mexico , and about 15 km to the south from Mexico .

history

The city was founded as a railroad depot in July 1904 when the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway laid its tracks here. It was named after Donna Fletcher , the head of the post office, which opened in 1908.

According to the census in 2000 , 14,768 people lived here in 4,167 households and 3,525 families. The population density was 1,131.3 people per km². The racial the population was composed of 76.06% White, 0.37% African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.00% Pacific islanders, and 20.40% others ethnic groups. About 2.40% were mixed race and 87.26% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 4,167 households, 43.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.0% of these were married couples living together. 20.0% were single mothers and 15.4% were non-families. 13.6% of all households were single households and 8.8% had people living in it who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.54 and the average family size was 3.91.

34.1% of the population were under 18 years old, 10.7% 18 to 24, 23.9% 25 to 44, 17.1% 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 29 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 92.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 86.2 men.

The median income for a household in the 22,800 USD , and the median income for a family 23,892 USD. Males had a median income of $ 19,815 versus $ 17,009 for females. The per capita income was $ 8,569. 37.8% of the population and 32.6% of families are below the poverty line. 48.1% of these were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 25.5% were 65 or older.
