Church in Börzow

The village church Börzow is an Evangelical Lutheran church building in Börzow , a district of the municipality Stepenitztal in the district of Northwest Mecklenburg ( Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ). It belongs to the parish of Roggenstorf in the Wismar provost of the Mecklenburg parish of the northern church .

History and architecture

The village church of Börzow was built in brick with blasted field stones probably in the middle of the 15th century. It has a rectangular nave with a flat beamed ceiling and a ribbed vaulted choir in the east. From the choir, the room is opened by a pointed triumphal arch. The church interior with a simple wooden ceiling was prepared for a vault at the time of construction.

The squat, square church tower of the same width as the nave is crowned by a pointed, octagonal clapboard helmet, which is the same height as its masonry. The burial chapel on the south side was built in 1738 for the von Bernstorff family, who lived in Bernstorf . The south vestibule is essentially medieval, it has been renewed several times. On the north side is the neo-Gothic mortuary, it was probably added in the second half of the 19th century.

Furnishing

The interior of the church is characterized by foundations of the Bernstorff family, which made up for the losses of the Thirty Years' War through attacks by Swedish troops. Remains of ornamental frescoes from the second half of the 15th century have been preserved from earlier times; they were uncovered during restoration work in 1912. Acanthus tendrils and consecration crosses are visible in the walls of the triumphal arch.

The two-storey baroque altarpiece from 1718 with its rich acanthus carving is also a foundation of the Bernstorff family and is attributed to Johannes Friedrich Wilde . The simple pulpit was made in 1674 and is painted with prophets. The crucifix is probably a work from the beginning of the 18th century. The additions to the church treasure made after the Thirty Years War were stolen again on November 8th and 9th, 1806 during the French era .

The organ (nine registers , a manual and pedal ) from 1865 is the work of the Schwerin organ builder Friedrich Friese III . The neo-Gothic prospect with three pipe fields stands on the west gallery in the tower room behind a low arch. In 1992 the organ builder Michael Becker (Kupfermühle) carried out repairs.

The bell from 1420, cast in 1854 by Peter Martin Hausbrandt from Wismar , was lost during the First World War. In the tower there is a bell cast in 1922 and a cast steel bell from 1962.
