Interior detail

The Osterwohle village church is located in the Osterwohle district of the town of Salzwedel in the north-west of Saxony-Anhalt . It was built as a Romanesque village church, but was rebuilt in the Mannerist style and is now considered an outstanding building from this era, which represents the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque .

history

The Osterwohler Church was built in the 13th century as a plastered stone church. It served as a village church and as an estate church for the von der Schulenburg family .

The church was extensively rebuilt in the first two decades of the 17th century. It received a tail gable and in the west a round stair tower with a curved dome. The church was provided with a large, richly articulated, slate-covered roof turret. In the north portal the church received a carved wooden door in Mannerist style. The equipment was renewed in a particularly complex way. A wooden coffered ceiling and a rood screen as an altar barrier were installed. The new chairs, the baptismal font and the pulpit were carved from linden and oak . Several masters were involved, but they followed a unified concept. The founder was Oleke, born von Saldern († 1622), the wife of Albrechts VI. von der Schulenburg, who lived on the fiefdom Osterwohle. The year 1621 is carved into the pulpit and marks the completion of the redesign.

Architecture and equipment

The Osterwohler Church is brightly plastered. The field stones are clearly visible. The church has a particularly rich, uniformly designed interior from the Mannerist era. All wood carvings are made in the frame from oak wood and in the decor from linden wood. They are neither framed nor colored. Numerous masks are part of the decor.

Further items of equipment are a painted altarpiece , a tombstone of Georg von der Schulenburg and his wife Anna von Veltheim and a wooden epitaph .

The church belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran parish Osterwohle- Bombeck in the parish of Salzwedel of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

Surroundings

The church is located in the southern part of the village of Osterwohle, east of the road that leads further south to the manor.
