history

View from the south

The community of Zauchwitz was first mentioned in a document in 1317. Investigations showed that a previous building must have existed in the 13th century, on the foundation of which the church was built. The field stone church was first mentioned in 1459. This building also fell victim to the Thirty Years' War . In 1650 the municipality rebuilt the building. Around 1725 she extended it to the east "about the size of today's choir and chancel". A building inscription on the altar reports that the windows of this extension were also rebuilt in the shape of a basket arch. Around 1850 the municipality built the square west tower out of brick . In 1881 the roof and the belfry burned down. In 1894 the church received an organ . During World War II , an armored shell damaged the triangular gable of the tower. The reconstruction took place in 1953 in a simpler form with a framework . The community carried out a major renovation between 1987 and 1993. Remnants of the medieval painting could be exposed.

West portal

The nave was built from unevenly layered field stones with a rectangular floor plan. After the expansion in the 18th century, there are a total of five large and one small, basket-shaped window on the south side of the nave. They are distributed unevenly across the facade. A modern walling can be seen below the second large window. In the eastern area is the sacristy , which was built from masonry bricks and half-timbering. The choir east wall also consists of unevenly layered field stones, only hewn at the corners. Above the eaves, a vertical reinforcement can be seen on the bricks, which runs towards a small opening. On the northern long side there are a total of six large windows, which are supplemented by two smaller windows arranged one above the other towards the west tower. The ship has a simple gable roof. The tower made of reddish bricks is also kept comparatively simple. A cornice with a German band separates the lower part at about the level of the eaves of the nave. Access is via an arched portal with one step, which can be reached via a staircase. Small, arched windows are embedded in both tower floors: one on the north and one on the south side each at the level of the ground floor and one on the second floor and two further windows on the west side. The upper part is provided with a framework and has two arched and coupled sound arcades on each side . Above the framework, the tower ends with a tent roof , a sphere and a weather vane.

Furnishing

The nave is provided with a barrel vault that is plastered. A gallery from the 18th century is built into its south and east sides . The pulpit altar dates from 1726 and stands in front of a large drapery . The basket stands between two pillars decorated with acanthus cheeks . Above is a sun that was painted in 1953. During the renovation work in the 1990s, experts were able to uncover an ornamental window frame that dates from the Middle Ages .
