History of Kaba

In 1862, Franz Bauer founded the former Kaba as a locksmith's shop and cash register factory in Zurich. In 1915 it was taken over by Leo Bodmer and Bauer AG was founded. When the inventor and inventor Fritz Schori invented the first cylinder lock with a reversible key in 1934 , Bauer AG had the invention patented and named the lock after the company founder Franz Bauer, who was popularly known as the cashier - Kaba for short.

In 1968 Bauer AG opened a new factory for banking equipment in Rümlang. At the same time, the first production and sales companies were set up abroad. Kabalocks Ltd London was established in England and Bauer Ges.mbH Eggenburg in Austria.

In 1974 the new locking system factory was built in Wetzikon. In the same year Bauer AG was converted into Bauer Holding AG, Zurich.

In the period from 1988 to 1998, Bauer Holding AG gradually took over the companies Benzing Zeit + Datentechnik GmbH, Gallenschütz Sicherheitstechnik GmbH, Inform Objektschutz GmbH, Gilgen AG for door and gate automation and the Austrian company Grundmann Locking Technology (GEGE brand) in Herzogenburg. This led to a new product integration strategy. Locks, doors, identification systems and access control were offered for the first time from a single source, combined with one another and integrated.

In 1995 Bauer Holding AG was renamed Kaba Holding AG.

With the takeover of Unican Security Systems Ltd in Toronto in 2001, Kaba became the global market leader in the areas of key blanks, milling machines and transponder keys (Ilco and Silca) as well as in the area of high security and safe locks (Ilco, Kaba Mas, Kaba Mauer and Paxos) .

In 2006 the company expanded to China with the acquisition of 80% of the Chinese Wah Yuet Group , two years later the remaining 20% were also acquired. In the same year, the American Computerized Security Systems Inc. (CSS), with the world-famous brands Saflok and La Gard, and the Dutch distribution partner H. Cillekens & Zn. BV were acquired for 1.5 million euros and their subsidiary Silca was merged with Tuff Engineering Inc. to form the Minda Silca Engineering Ltd joint venture . In the following year, the joint venture with the Indian Minda Group resulted in the company Dorset Kaba Security Systems Pvt. Ltd. , in which Kaba increased its stake from 49% to 74% in 2014.

In 2008, Kaba received the "Security Innovation Award" in gold for the newly developed RCID identification technology.

In 2011 the Door Automation segment was sold to the Japanese Nabtesco . In the same year, Kaba acquired the German-American company e-Data, a specialist in web-based solutions that combine access control and time recording.

The merger with Dorma took place in 2015.
