Dorotea ( South Sami : Döörte ) is a place ( tätort ) in the Swedish province of Västerbotten County and the historic province of Lapland and is the capital of the municipality of Dorotea .

Until 1799 the place was called Bergvattnet, then it was named after the Swedish Queen Frederika Dorothea Wilhelmina von Baden , wife of King Gustav IV Adolf . The towns of Fredrika and Vilhelmina in the region were named after her. Dorotea has a train station on the Inlandsbahn , the European route 45 runs through the town .
