From 1947 to 1954 Dorothea Kobs-Lehmann studied at the then Berlin-Weißensee School of Art (Dipl.), Among others with Professors Tank ( anatomy ), Strempel and Arno Mohr ( nudes ), Max Lingner (painting of contemporary events), Walter Womacka ( painting ) and Walter Howarth ( sculpture ). In doing so, she took up the predominant (also controversially discussed) elements of muralism that prevailed there during her studies , which she implemented undeterred by the formalism discussion in the GDR in the 1950s, which continued into her later works.

In addition to landscape still lifes and depictions of the world of work, primarily the fishermen, but also a woodcut cycle about animals in the Berlin zoo , she turned to political issues of the history of Berlin in the 20th century, especially in her middle creative period. In the 1960s and 1970s she worked in a strictly structured language of forms, mainly using the technique of two- and multi-colored woodcuts .

Her late work (again more often than oil painting) then clearly tends towards the image conception of the late Leipzig School (see: Bernhard Heisig ), here she dealt with the culture of Mongolia and Uzbekistan .

She was actively involved in the Association of German Visual Artists (VBKD, later VBK of the GDR), worked in the “Galerie am Strausberger Platz ” in Berlin in the early 1980s and was, among other things, long-time SED party secretary in the VBK of the GDR at the district level .

Dorothea Kobs-Lehmann has had numerous exhibitions, including at the 3rd German Art Exhibition in Dresden , in the Verbandsgalerie Berlin and the Berlin district exhibition in 1985.
