Dorothea Kuhn

Dorothea Kuhn (born March 11, 1923 in Halle an der Saale ; † December 13, 2015 in Weimar ) was a German science historian , edition philologist and Goethe researcher .

Life

Dorothea Kuhn studied chemistry from 1941 to 1944 at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and passed the pre-exam. In 1945 she left her hometown Halle. In 1952 she received her doctorate with a dissertation "To clarify the symmetry of the plant body" at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz .

Since 1952 Kuhn has been the editor of the critical edition "Goethe - Die Schriften zur Naturwissenschaft" published by the Leopoldina , one of the few joint scientific projects in divided Germany. Since the deaths of Karl Lothar Wolf (1969), Rupprecht Matthaei (1976) and Wilhelm Troll (1978), Dorothea Kuhn and Wolf von Engelhardt have published the Leopoldina edition of Goethe's writings on natural science.

From 1959 to 1962 she studied edition philology with Friedrich Beißner . From 1962 to 1981 Kuhn headed the Cotta archive in the Schiller National Museum in Marbach. In 1970 she completed her habilitation at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen for the subject of the history of natural sciences, and in 1978 she was re- qualified at the Ruprecht Karls University of Heidelberg , where she held an extraordinary professorship from 1981 to 1983 . She was a member of the Leopoldina from 1970. Dorothea Kuhn was "one of the great mediators of science in the GDR and the Federal Republic".
