Dorothy Caruso (born August 6, 1893 in Hastings-on-Hudson , New York as Dorothy Park Benjamin , † December 16, 1955 in Baltimore , Maryland ) was an American heiress and writer .

Dorothy Park Benjamin was the daughter of the millionaire and art patron Jakob Benjamin and his wife Gloria Park. She spent her childhood on the east coast of the United States and got to know Europe at a young age while traveling with her family . Dorothy received extensive training and spoke several foreign languages.

On August 20, 1918, Dorothy Park Benjamin married the Italian tenor Enrico Caruso (1873-1921) in New York . The connection resulted in a daughter, Gloria (1919–1999). After only three years of marriage, her husband tragically died at the age of 48 and was buried in the Cimitero del Pianto church in Naples . The film " The Great Caruso " with Mario Lanza in the title role is the Caruso biography of his widow Dorothy retold in a relaxed sequence of scenes. Because of its fictitious content, the film was banned in Italy.

Since the 1940s she lived with the writer Margaret Anderson (1886–1973) alternately in France and New York. Dorothy Caruso died of complications from a heart attack and was buried in Calverton National Cemetery .
