Doug Frith
Douglas Cockburn Frith , PC (born March 5, 1945 in Brampton , Ontario , † March 21, 2009 in Ottawa , Ontario) was a Canadian politician ( Liberal Party ) and represented the Sudbury District in the Canadian House of Commons from 1980 to 1988 .
Frith attended Sudbury High School and studied at the University of Toronto . Before he got into politics, he was a pharmacist in Sudbury .
He served as Parliamentary State Secretary in the Ministry of Health from 1980 to 1982, during Pierre Trudeau's last administration . When John Turner succeeded Trudeau as party chairman and prime minister in 1984, he brought Frith to the cabinet as Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development . The Liberals lost the 1984 election and Frith was one of only 40 Liberal MPs to be re-elected.
Frith worked in the opposition's shadow cabinet . In 1988 he did not run for election to accept an appointment as Vice President of Hill & Knowlton can. He became chairman of the Canadian branch in 1995.
From July 1996 to January 2008 he was President of the Canadian Motion Picture Distributors Association, which is associated with the Motion Picture Association of America and represents the interests of the film industry in Canada. In April 2008, he became vice chairman of Global Public Affairs.
Frith died on March 21, 2009 after a heart attack in Ottawa. He leaves seven children and five grandchildren.
