The Douglas Charles Airport is one of two airports on the island Republic of Dominica . The airport was called Melville Hall Airport until it was officially renamed on October 27, 2014 . The new name was chosen in memory of two of the island's former Prime Ministers , Pierre Charles and Rosie Douglas . It was opened in 1961 and is located about 30 km northeast of the capital Roseau . The airport has no international approval and is only approved for smaller passenger planes. In recent years, Douglas-Charles Airport has been expanded with financial support from the EU and Venezuela and since the end of 2010 has had a sufficiently long runway and an instrument landing system so that it can also be approached at night and in poor visibility. On August 9, 2010, the first IFR- assisted night landing on Dominica was carried out by the Caribbean airline Winair , and since July 5, 2011, the Caribbean airline LIAT has been flying to Douglas-Charles Airport daily with a night landing from Antigua . However, these night flights are controversial because the landing approach is considered risky due to the unfavorable location of the airport and the short runway.

Flight operations

The airport is regularly operated by the airlines Air Antilles Express ( Fort-de-France and Pointe-à-Pitre ), BVI Airways ( Tortola and Sint Maarten ), LIAT (Antigua, Barbados , Guadeloupe and San Juan), Seaborn Airlines ( San Juan , Saint Croix , Saint Thomas and Vieques ) and Winair ( Aruba , Pointe-à-Pitre, Port-au-Prince , Saba , Sint Maarten, Santo Domingo , St. Barth , St. Eustatius , St. Kitts and Nevis , Tortola) served. Flights to and from Porlamar operated by the Venezuelan airline Conviasa were suspended as of March 2014 and were not resumed until the company ceased operations in 2017. The company American Eagle Airlines introduced its flights from San Juan one in March, 2013.
