Douglas Smythe

Douglas "Doug" Smythe (* before 1988) is a special effects artist .

Life

Smythe began his career with Industrial Light & Magic in the late 1980s and made his feature film debut in 1989 with Ron Howard's adventure film Willow . He subsequently worked on a number of Hollywood - blockbusters like James Cameron's Abyss - Abyss of Death and Terminator 2 - Judgment Day , Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Robert Zemeckis ' Back to the Future Part II and Back to the Future III .

For his work on Robert Zemeckis ' comedy Death Suits Her , he received the BAFTA Film Award in the category Best Visual Effects and the Oscar in the category Best Visual Effects in 1993. In addition, he received the Oscar for technical merits for the MORF system, which he helped to develop and which was first used in the film .

In 1994 he received the Oscar for Science and Development for the concept and development of a digital retouching system for removing dirt from film recordings. In 1996 , Smythe was awarded another Oscar for technical merit for pioneering work on the ILM digital film mixing system.

His later works include films of the Star Wars - and Star Trek - franchises , Gore Verbinski's Pirates of the Caribbean - Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End and the Marvel - superhero films Iron Man and Iron Man 2 .
