Draner , actually Jules Jean Georges Renard (born November 11, 1833 in Liège , † 1926 in Paris ), was a Belgian painter , draftsman and caricaturist . The artist, who lived in Paris from 1861, worked as an illustrator for numerous well-known newspapers and later designed costumes for various renowned theaters and opera houses.
Life
Jules Renard was born in Liège in 1833, the son of a printer. His later stage name Draner he formed as an anagram from his surname Renard. He also used the stage name Paf for some time ! . After finishing school, he first worked in the administration of the Société Anonyme des Mines et Fonderies de Zinc de la Vieille-Montagne , a company in the zinc industry in his hometown. As an autodidact he began to draw and created his first caricatures, finding his motifs in everyday life in Liège and soon collaborating with local newspapers. The Uylenspiegel newspaper, founded in Brussels by Félicien Rops , also published his drawings .
In 1861 he moved to Paris, where the Vieille Montagne had a branch. At the beginning of his Parisian years, Draner mainly caricatured military life in his drawings. Between 1861 and 1864 he produced 136 color lithographs on this subject, depicting the military of different nationalities in an ironic way. He published these images in albums such as Types militaires de toutes les nations , Nouvelle vie militaire or Le colonel Ramollot . From 1866 he worked as a draftsman for the satirical magazine Le Charivari , where he succeeded Amédée de Noé as a regular illustrator in 1879 . In addition, his drawings have appeared in magazines such as L'Eclipse , Le Monde Classique , Paris-Comique , L'Illustration , Le Monde Illustré , Le journal amusant and Petit Journal pour rire .
From 1864 to 1893 Draner also designed costumes for theaters and opera houses. His imaginative stage clothes were intended for performances at the Scala in Milan, the Drury Lane Theater in London, the Théâtre des Galeries Saint-Hubert in Brussels, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, as well as the Parisian theaters Théâtre du Châtelet , Théâtre de la Renaissance , Éden -Théâtre or the Folies Bergère .
Draner died in Paris in 1926. He bequeathed his drawings to the University of Liège .
