Drei von Sinnen is a German documentary film by the director Kerim Kortel from 2016 . A journey by three young men is described, which they undertake with handicaps following the example of the three monkeys (“see nothing, hear nothing, say nothing”).

The three friends Bart Bouman, David Stumpp and Jakob von Gizycki will travel with their tent from Lake Constance to the French Atlantic coast in July 2014 . They carry out an experiment: each of them can alternately not see or hear anything for a week or are not allowed to speak. To do this, they use eye patches and hearing protection , which also generate noise. The film documents their experiences. So they have to fight blindly with feelings of hunger or feel deaf and strong isolation. The constant dependence on each other turns out to be stressful. Above all, however, they have to struggle with the very difficult communication. Although you use tablets and the finger alphabet , there are still irritations and discord. In the middle of the second week, when it was also raining constantly, they removed their handicaps in order to discuss whether they would like to continue the experiment.

They continue the journey and, after having hiked across the Black Forest and the Jura , come to Lyon by hitchhiking . The change in the big city improves the mood. They meet a Belgian woman her own age with whom they go to a pub, where she and Bart get closer. In the third week they do a particularly beautiful part of the Camino de Santiago , move around in a canoe and swim in a river. There are even feelings of happiness now; the friends now feel strong trust in one another. You will also meet locals and other travelers who react interested or amused to the group. Finally they arrive at the Atlantic Ocean, where they review the journey.

In addition to the “Official Selection” at several smaller film festivals, the documentary won the “Golden Wing Award 2016” in the Best Documentary Film category at the Eindhoven Film Festival.

The premiere was on November 21, 2016 in Konstanz . Since then, the film has been presented as part of a “cinema tour”, during which the protagonists of the film are also present to answer questions after the screening.

The film was also released on DVD with options with German subtitles for the hearing impaired as well as English. At the moment, the DVD can only be pre-ordered, as the film will officially launch on June 15, 2017. After the theatrical release, the DVD will be available again.
