Drimia cryptopoda is a plant of the genus Drimia in the family of asparagaceae (Asparagaceae). The specific epithet cryptopoda is derived from the Greek words kryptos for 'hidden' and podos for 'foot' and refers to the underground onions.

description

Drimia cryptopoda is a dwarf, bald geophyte . It grows with underground, spherical bulbs that are 2 to 3 centimeters in diameter. The outer onion scales are fleshy and green. The six to ten ascending, linear-lanceolate leaves are present at flowering time and form a basal rosette . They are then 6 centimeters long and 1 centimeter wide. After the flowering period, they are up to 25 centimeters long and 1 centimeter wide. The dark green leaves are somewhat fleshy and shiny.

The upright inflorescence reaches a length of up to 5 centimeters and is sessile or stalked 5 centimeters long. The densely set, ascending-spreading flowers are almost sessile. The white and pink flower envelope is about 7 millimeters long. Your free elongated lobes have a length of 2.5 millimeters and are 1.5 millimeters wide. The stamens are attached in the middle of the short perigone tube. The stamens are filiform, the ovary ovoid and the stylus cylindrical.

The triangular, almost spherical fruits are 4 millimeters long and 4.5 millimeters wide. They contain irregularly edged, black seeds .

Systematics and distribution

Drimia cryptopoda is distributed in Madagascar in the Ankaratra massif between grasses at altitudes of around 1800 meters.

The first description as Hyacinthus cryptopodus by John Gilbert Baker was published in 1883. Martin Pfosser , Wolfgang Wetschnig and Franz Speta placed the species in the genus Drimia in 2006 .

A synonym is Ledebouria cryptopoda (Baker) JCManning & Goldblatt (2004).
