Cengiz or Genghis or Tschingis is a Turkish - Mongolian male first name and family name , which can also be found in all other Turkic peoples . It has the meanings strong , adamant, and brave . Another meaning is the sea or the ocean . In these meanings, Cengiz is a variant of Deniz .
Contrary to the widespread interpretation that this name goes back to the Mongolian ruler Genghis Khan , this name was also found before his time. So there was already before the Genghis Khan period (1155-1227) with the Seljuks - Atabeg Zengi (1087-1146), another personality who bore this name. Zengi is another variant of Cengiz.
