Career highlights and awards

Robert Duke Osborn (born February 1, 1897 in Falls Creek , Pennsylvania , USA - † November 2, 1976 in Lansing , Michigan ) was an American football player . He played as guard and center in the National Football League (NFL) with the Pottsville Maroons , Canton Bulldogs and Cleveland Bulldogs .

Player career

Duke Osborn studied at Pennsylvania State University , where he played football for the Penn State Nittany Lions . In 1921 he was hired by the Canton Bulldogs. A year later took Guy Chamberlin the coaching job with the Bulldogs. Chamberlin also ran as a player for the team. The team around the future member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Pete Henry remained undefeated in the 1922 season and won ten of twelve games with two draws. This made the team champions in the NFL. The following year the Bulldogs were able to defend the title. In 1924 Osborn moved with the Bulldogs to Cleveland . The team remained a top team and won the third NFL championship in a row. In 1925, Osborn moved to the Pottsville Maroons , where he became a player with Herb and Russ Stein . Coach Dick Rauch's team emerged victorious ten times this season and lost two matches. The Pottsville team declared themselves the titleholders. This statement was not recognized by the NFL. The Maroons had won their game that season against the Chicago Cardinals , the actual NFL champions, but the Chicago team had the highest win rate and the Maroons broke the rules at the end of the season, prompting the NFL to do the Cardinals to declare master.

Osborn played in Pottsville for three more years. In 1928, the later members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Walt Kiesling and John McNally joined the team. Pete Henry took over the coaching position. But even these top players could not prevent the team from winning only two out of ten games. After the game round, Osborn ended his career. He later worked in the American auto industry.
