Kazimierz Dunin-Markiewicz
Kazimierz Count Dunin-Markiewicz (* 15. March 1874 in Denichowka, Circle Taraschtscha , Kiev Governorate , Russian Empire , now Denychiwka, Raion Tetiiw , Kiev Oblast , Ukraine ; † 2. December 1932 in Warsaw ) was a Polish portraits , genre and landscape painter , theater director and author of several plays .
Life
Dunin-Markiewicz came from the Polish landed gentry . The ancestor of the Dunin family is a certain Piotr Dunin, who lived under King Bolesław III. Wrymouth is said to have emigrated from Denmark to Poland in the 12th century . The Dunin-Markiewicz family originally came from Kujawy and later moved to Nowogrodzkie. They had possessions in Ukraine (Żywotówka, Jastrzębnice, Różyn). Kazimierz was married to Jadwiga Neyman († 1899) for the first time. From this marriage there was a son, Stanisław Dunin-Markiewicz (1896-?), Who is possibly shown in the painting as an eight-year-old boy.
Dunin-Markiewicz first studied law at the university from 1892 and painting at the Polish Academy of Fine Arts in Kiev. From 1895 he moved to the art academy in Paris , where he devoted himself exclusively to the fine arts. There he met his second wife, the Irish freedom fighter Constance Markiewicz , born in 1899 . Goore-Booth, whom he married on September 29, 1900. From this marriage, their daughter Maeve Alys emerged. From 1902 they lived in Dublin.
Most of his pictures are in Dublin , a few can be seen in Poland ( Muzeum Narodowe in Krakow, private collection, etc.). His talent is particularly evident in the large oil portraits of the two Polish presidents Józef Piłsudski and Stanisław Wojciechowski . The name of Dunin-Markiewicz is mainly known to posterity through his second wife, Constance Markiewicz. Towards the end of his life, Dunin-Markiewicz worked for the American Consulate in Warsaw and as a correspondent for English magazines such as the London Daily News . A catalog of works on his literary as well as visual work is still pending.
