The score for Dunkirk , a historical film by Christopher Nolan , was composed by Hans Zimmer . The soundtrack for the film was released on July 21, 2017.
production
The music for the film Dunkirk was composed by Hans Zimmer , who started work in January 2016. Here he worked with Lorne Balfe and Benjamin Wallfisch .
Since the film lacks dialogue, the music plays a key role. Patrick Heidmann from epd Film thinks that the sound and the exciting, unfamiliar film music are also more important than the pictures by cameraman Hoyte van Hoytema because of the few dialogues. Zimmer combined the film music with a recording of a ticking pocket watch belonging to director Nolan. Zimmer also processed other sound noises in the film music, such as interwoven violin and synthesizer sounds, which means that it comes along with the speed of an action film from the 1990s, according to Blake Goble of Consequence of Sound , and adapts to the individual moments of the film.
publication
The soundtrack includes 11 pieces of music and was released on July 21, 2017 by WaterTower Music as a download and on CD. The soundtrack was released on vinyl on October 13, 2017. At the beginning of July 2017, Warner Bros. published its first track, Supermarine, on YouTube. On February 28, 2018, pieces from the film music specially arranged for the Oscar concert were played live by the Los Angeles Philharmonic .

reception
Film critic Kevin McCarthy said Hans Zimmer's music starred in the film.
The Telegraph said Zimmer, who had worked with Christopher Nolan since the 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises , triumphed once more with his work for Dunkirk when he combined his tension-building score with the ticking of the director's pocket watch .
Kathrin Häger from Filmdienst describes: "Sometimes the swelling scores are reminiscent of the sounds of an echo sounder , sometimes of metal struts rubbing against each other, then again of sirens that put you in a riot."
Peter Debruge from Variety speaks of a bombastic, tension-increasing film music, in which an almost omnipresent ticking of the stopwatch is woven into the sometimes overwhelming sound design of the film. It is not so much about music, but rather a bass-heavy, atmospheric background noise. His colleague Kristopher Tapley thinks Zimmer is a promising candidate for the upcoming Academy Awards , and his score is incredibly effective at driving the film forward at all times.
Chart successes
On July 28, 2017, the soundtrack entered the Soundtrack Albums Chart Top 50 at position 5.
