Earl Freeman

Earl “Googles” Freeman (* 1937 in Oakland , California ) is a former American free jazz bassist .

Freeman did his military service in the Korean War . He lived in France in the late 1960s and recorded with Archie Shepp , Sunny Murray , Noah Howard , Clifford Thornton , Mike Osborne , Kenneth Terroade and Selwyn Lissack . He was also involved in the first album by the Gong group , Magick Brother . When performing, he often wore parts of a fighter pilot's equipment, allegedly up to the parachute. In 1972 he was expelled after questioning by the French police and returned to the United States. In the next few years he performed in New York City , including with the Music Ensemble . He also directed the Universal Jazz Symphonette and played with this band, which included Billy Bang , Raphé Malik and William Parker , the 1975 album Soundcraft . In 1979 he was a member of Bill Summers' band ( On Sunshine ). In 1984 he recorded another album with Henry P. Warner and Philip Spigner in the trio The Freestyle Band .

Freeman also appeared as a poet and visual artist.
