Selwyn Lissack

Selwyn Lissack (born July 27, 1942 in Johannesburg ) is a media artist , entrepreneur and jazz musician living in the USA , who has emerged as a pioneer of holography .

Live and act

Lissack has played as a drummer since he was 15 years old . From 1961 he studied at Capetown Tech , from 1964 to also music and art at the University of Cape Town. He also toured with Kathy Kirby , Mark Murphy and played in Ronnie Beer's band in 1964 . In 1966 he migrated to London, where he headed the design department of Design Development ; in addition, he explored free jazz . In 1969 he played an album under his own name; in the same year he was involved in Ric Colbeck's album The Sun is Coming Up . After Colbeck's death, he moved to New York, where he used a laser with David Izenzon and Alan Silva during a concert and recognized its potential. In 1970 he co-founded Holographic Desigh Development , the first company to develop and market holographic products. There was also a collaboration with McDonnell Douglas , the development of the first holographic printer and in 1973 with Joseph R. Burns and Cecile Ruchin to found the New York School of Holography .

In particular, he devoted himself to the use of laser technology in the visual arts. Together with Dennis Gabor , he supported Salvador Dali between 1971 and 1975 in the creation of seven artistic holograms . His own hologram Transcendental Reflection was exhibited at the Hudson River Museum as early as 1973 . A three-dimensional portrait of Sam Rivers is in the MIT Holographic Museum . His three-dimensional exhibit Inner Space is shown at the Musion Theater in San Diego . Later he worked on the giclee technique and made three-dimensional prints that depict strange landscapes.

Between 1975 and 1978 he acted as deputy head of Holovision International in La Palma (California) , which also belonged to him. In 1979 he founded the company Laserworks in Tucson , which is particularly dedicated to the development of laser scanners in various areas of application.

After both albums, on which Lissack participated around 1970, were classified by Thurston Moore in his Top Ten from the Free Jazz Underground , he returned to the stage in 2006 for concerts. Together with his wife, Linda Lissack, he wrote the book Dali in Holographic Space .
