Eberhard Becker (clergyman)

Eberhard Becker , full Adolf Wilhelm Eberhard Becker (born January 16, 1823 in Domhof Ratzeburg , † October 28, 1897 in Mirow ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran clergyman.

Life

Eberhard Becker was one of nine children of the vice-principal and later the last rector of the Ratzeburg Cathedral School Ulrich Justus Hermann Becker and his wife Mathilde, née. Hufeland, a daughter of Gottlieb Hufeland . Otto Becker was his younger brother. After attending the cathedral school until Easter 1841, he studied Protestant theology at the universities of Erlangen and Berlin . In Erlangen, Adolf Harleß and Johann von Hofmann were his teachers , in Berlin August Neander and Philipp Konrad Marheineke . After completing his studies, Becker first became a private tutor, as was customary at the time. From Easter 1848 he worked as a teacher at the Carolinum grammar school in Neustrelitz . In 1850 he became a teacher. 1857 Rector of the Neustrelitz Higher School for Daughters . From 1860 to 1865 he worked as a teacher of the Hereditary Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich at the court in Neustrelitz. On October 8, 1865, Grand Duke Friedrich Wilhelm appointed him pastor of the church in Mirow . In this capacity he led the burials of several members of the grand ducal house in the princely crypt, including Duke Georg and Duchess Caroline in quick succession in 1876 . In 1877 he became a prepositus (provost) of the church district.

He died after severe suffering that had prevented him from exercising his office for a long time.

Since March 21, 1850 he was married to Julie Wilhelmine Sofie, b. Kortüm, a daughter of the Secret Medical Council Theodor Kortüm in Neustrelitz. The couple had two sons, of whom Theodor Becker became a professor at the Carolinum grammar school in Neustrelitz and Otto Becker became a businessman in Hamburg, as well as two daughters.
