Eberhard Hesse

Eberhard Hesse (born June 28, 1911 in Rixdorf ; † March 28, 1986 in Berlin ) was a German politician ( SPD ) and resistance fighter against National Socialism .

Life

Hesse was born in Berlin in 1911 as the son of a school principal. After graduating from high school, he began to study newspaper and political science. Eberhard Hesse was already active in the Socialist Workers' Youth (SAJ) at a young age . In 1930 he joined the SPD. From 1932 Hesse headed the SAJ in the Berlin district of Neukölln . After the seizure of power of the Nazis in 1933 he was forced to abort his studies and was then, then engaged in the printing industry in the food industry. At the same time he took part in the resistance in the environment of the group " New Beginning ". This stood in opposition to the SPD party executive, which is why Hesse, along with other Social Democrats (including Fritz Erler and Kurt Mattick ), was expelled from the party on April 11, 1933. On April 23, 1936, he was arrested and taken to the prison of the Secret State Police Office ( Gestapa ) at Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse 8. On January 9, 1937, he was sentenced to one and a half years in prison. In December 1940 Hesse was drafted into the military. Between 1945 and 1947 he was a Soviet prisoner of war .

After the war , Hesse was director of the August Bebel Institute from 1947 to 1974 . Between 1948 and 1952, Hesse was a member of the Association of Teachers and Educators. From 1953 to 1959 Hesse was a member of the Berlin Press Association, and since 1959 he has belonged to the IG Druck und Papier .

From 1951 to 1961, Hesse headed the press office of the Berlin SPD . He then took over the post of country manager of the SPD, which he held until 1971. For the constituency of Britz-Buckow I, he was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives from February 2, 1956 to 1975 . Within the Berlin SPD he was a leading representative of an anti totalitarian orientation and advocated a strict line of demarcation from the SED and the APO .

Eberhard Hesse was married and had two children. On March 28, 1986, Eberhard Hesse died in Berlin after a long illness.
