Kurt Mattick
Kurt Mattick (born June 27, 1908 in Berlin ; † January 6, 1986 there ) was a German SPD politician .
Life and work
After attending primary school in Berlin, Mattick completed an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering from 1922 to 1926. He then worked as a locksmith until the outbreak of the Second World War . Initially he was employed at the Borsig factory until 1931 , later at a Ford dealer. Before 1933 he was a member of the German Metalworkers' Association , in which he temporarily held the office of apprentice chairman. During the time of National Socialism he got involved in the group Neu Beginnen . He was summoned several times by the Gestapo , but never arrested. Initially a soldier in the war from 1940 to 1941, he was soon drafted as a locksmith at Siemens in Berlin.
After the Second World War , Mattick was Otto Suhr's personal advisor . In 1946/47 he was an employee of the SPD parliamentary group in the city council of Greater Berlin. He then worked as a journalist for various social democratic newspapers, and then from 1952 until he moved into the Bundestag as a commercial agent. From 1965 to 1983 Mattick was chairman of the broadcasting council of Deutsche Welle .
Political party
Mattick belonged to the Socialist Workers' Youth since 1924 and to the SPD since 1926.
In 1945 he became head of the SPD works group in the central administration of German industry in Berlin. From 1947 to 1952 and 1958 to 1963 he was deputy state chairman of the SPD Berlin. In 1963 he took over the state chairmanship there from Willy Brandt , who rose to become national chairman of his party in February 1964. In 1968 he handed it over to the Governing Mayor Klaus Schütz . Overall, he was a member of the Berlin SPD state executive from 1947 to 1984.
MP
Mattick was a member of the German Bundestag from 1953 to 1980. From June 27, 1955 to 1957 he was deputy chairman of the Bundestag's electoral law committee, and from February 2, 1967 to 1976 of the Foreign Affairs Committee . From 1969 to 1972 he was chairman of the working group for foreign and internal German relations of the SPD parliamentary group, then until 1976 of the working group for foreign and security policy, internal German relations, European and development policy. From 1976 to 1980 he was finally chairman of the Bundestag committee for intra-German relations.
At times he was also a member of the North Atlantic Assembly , the Assembly of the Western European Union and the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe .
Honors
Kurt Mattick was awarded the German Federal Cross of Merit (1968) with a star (1973) and shoulder ribbon (1983). Mattick was awarded the Ernst Reuter plaque of the city of Berlin in 1973 and was buried in the Waldfriedhof Zehlendorf ; his grave was designated as an honorary grave of the city of Berlin until 2009 .
