Eberhard Hofmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eberhard Hofmann (born  April 19, 1930 in Chemnitz ) is a German biochemist . From 1961 he worked as a professor at the Medical Academy Magdeburg and from 1965 to 1997 at the University of Leipzig , where he was also director of the Institute for Physiological Chemistry from 1967. The focus of his scientific work, for which he was accepted into the GDR Academy of Sciences in 1977 and the Leopoldina in 1980 , was enzymology .

Life

Eberhard Hofmann was born in Chemnitz in 1930 and studied biology and chemistry from 1948 to 1956 at the Ernst Moritz Arndt University in Greifswald and at the Humboldt University in Berlin , where Samuel Mitja Rapoport was one of his academic teachers. After receiving his doctorate in 1956 at Humboldt University, he received his habilitation in biochemistry in 1959 after working as an assistant or senior assistant at the physiological-chemical institute of the medical faculty there .

He then went to the Magdeburg Medical Academy , where he worked as a lecturer from 1960 and as a professor of biochemistry from 1961 and as director of the newly founded Physiological-Chemical Institute. In 1965 he moved to the University of Leipzig , where he succeeded Erich Strack as a professor with a chair in biochemistry and, two years later, took over the management of the Institute for Physiological Chemistry. He held this position until his retirement in 1997.

For the Kulturbund der GDR he belonged to the People's Chamber during the fourth electoral period from 1963 to 1967 .

Scientific work

Eberhard Hofmann published around 250 scientific publications and dedicated himself in particular to enzymological issues. He dealt with the oxidative metabolism in the context of the maturation of reticulocytes to erythrocytes as well as with the Pasteur effect and the Warburg effect in ascites tumor cells , and examined in particular the enzymes phosphofructokinase and pyruvate kinase . Later work concerned the molecular basis of enzyme induction in the liver and the mathematical modeling of enzyme systems.

Awards

Eberhard Hofmann was a corresponding member of the GDR Academy of Sciences from 1977 and a full member from 1980 , and has also been a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina since 1980 . In 1976 he received the GDR National Prize . In 2011 he received the Leopoldina Medal of Merit .
