Eberhard Georg Friedrich Wächter , from 1831 von Wächter , (born February 28, 1762 in Balingen , † August 14, 1852 in Stuttgart ) was a German painter .

Life

Eberhard von Wächter, son of the senior bailiff, later Privy Councilor and Consistorial Director Friedrich Christoph Wächter, as well as Sibylle Regine née Harpprecht, attended the art department of the Hohen Karlsschule in Stuttgart from 1781 to 1783 , and then continued his autodidactic training before he worked from 1785 to 1792 Studied painting with Jean-Baptiste Regnault , Jacques-Louis David and Antoine-Jean Gros in Paris .

In the same year Eberhard von Wächter went to Italy and met, among others, Asmus Jakob Carstens and Joseph Anton Koch in Rome . In 1808 he moved to Vienna , where he worked as an illustrator for Cottasche publishing products. In 1808 he returned to Stuttgart, where he was custodian of the royal cabinet of copper engravings from 1810 to 1817.

Eberhard von Wächter - he was initially influenced by Nicolas Poussin and Jacques-Louis David - is one of the outstanding painters of German classicism with his paintings based on ancient and biblical motifs, including Telemach's return . His main work is Hiob and his friends , created between 1797 and 1824, today in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart .

Honors

  • In 1831 Eberhard von Wächter was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown , which was associated with the personal title of nobility.
  • The city of Stuttgart named Wächterstrasse in 1873 and the Wächterstaffel in 1902 after him.
