description

Thelocactus bicolor grows spherical to conical or cylindrical. The body is blue or gray-green, a bit tomentose at the top and often thorny and about 6 to 10 centimeters in diameter. The 8 to 13  ribs are straight or twisted and divided into crooked cusps up to 1.5 centimeters high. The 9 to 18 radial spines are protruding or slightly curved and up to 3 centimeters long. The 1 to 4  central spines are all up to 3 centimeters long and vividly colored, white or reddish in the middle or red at the base and yellow at the tip, increasingly grayish with age. The lowest one is stretched out, sublect; the upper ones upright, flat.

The flowers are large, widely spread, 5 to 8 inches long and up to 10 inches wide with a lashed edge. The fruits are reddish brown scaly and edible.

Thelocactus bicolor is a very variable species in terms of color and density. It is therefore also known as the two-colored thelocactus .
