Echinocereus poselgeri is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet poselgeri honors the German doctor, chemist and botanist Heinrich Poselger (1818–1883), who collected succulent plants in North America from 1849 to 1851. English common names are " Dahlia Cactus ", " Lead Pencil Cactus ", " Pencil Cactus " and " Sacasil ".

description

Echinocereus poselgeri usually grows with several splaying shoots and forms a bulbous, dahlia-like rhizome. The dark blue-green slender and cylindrical shoots taper towards their tips. They are 60 to 120 centimeters long and 1 to 2 centimeters in diameter. There are eight to ten low and inconspicuous ribs that are not humped. The single, slightly flattened, dark central spine points to the tip of the shoot and is up to 9 millimeters long. The eight to 16 whitish or grayish radial spines have a darker tip and are 2 to 4.5 millimeters long.

Flower of Echinocereus poselgeri

The funnel-shaped flowers are a little pink-magenta in color. They sometimes appear terminal, but usually near the shoot tips, are up to 6 centimeters long and reach a diameter of up to 7 centimeters. The dark green to brown fruits are egg-shaped and covered with persistent wool and thorns.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus poselgeri is distributed in the United States in the south of the state of Texas and in the Mexican states of Coahuila , Durango , Nuevo León , Tamaulipas and San Luis Potosí in deep lengths in sandy soil. According to other authors, the species does not occur in Durango.

The first description by Charles Lemaire was published in 1868. The species belongs to the Wilcoxia section .

Nomenclatory synonyms are Cereus poselgeri (Lem.) JMCoult. (1896) and Wilcoxia poselgeri (Lem.) Britton & Rose (1909). Other synonyms include Echinocereus tamaulipensis (Werderm.) Mich.Lange (1995), Echinocereus kroenleinii (Mich.Lange) W.Blum & Waldeis (1999), Echinocereus waldeisii Haugg (1993) and Echinocereus tuberosus (Poselg.) Rümpler (1885 ).

Studies published in 2014 on the phylogenetic relationships in the genus Echinocereus confirmed the assumption that Echinocereus waldeisii Haugg (1993) is an independent species. Occasionally Echinocereus tamaulipensis and Echinocereus kroenleinii are regarded as separate species.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
