Echinomastus unguispinus is a species of plant in the genus Echinomastus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Echinomastus unguispinus grows individually with spherical to short cylindrical, densely thorny, bluish green shoots that reach heights of 8 to 14 centimeters with a diameter of 7 to 11 centimeters. There are 18 to 21 ribs , which are divided into cusps . The 3 to 9 central spines are whitish to dark and 1.5 to 3.5 inches long. The lowest of them is directed outwards to downwards. The 15 to 30 whitish radial spines turn gray with age. They are 1.5 to 3.3 millimeters long.

The funnel-shaped, dirty brownish- red flowers are up to 2.5 centimeters long. The ocher-colored, dry fruits are spherical to short elongated and about 9 millimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinomastus unguispinus is common in the Mexican states of Chihuahua , Coahuila , Durango , Zacatecas, and San Luis Potosí .

The first description as Echinocactus unguispinus was published in 1848 by Georg Engelmann . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Echinomastus in 1922 .

Nomenclatory synonyms are Neolloydia unguispina (Engelm.) LDBenson (1974), Thelocactus unguispinus (Engelm.) GDRowley (1986), Sclerocactus unguispinus (Engelm.) NPTaylor (1987) and Pediocactus unguispinus (Engelm.) Halda (1998).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
