Echinopsis taratensis is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet taratensis refers to the occurrence of the species near Tarata in the Bolivian department of Cochabamba .

Echinopsis taratensis grows as a shrub with several, upright branches branching out from the base and reaches heights of 1 to 1.5 meters. The club-shaped, dark green shoots have a diameter of 7 to 8 centimeters. There are roughly 15 sharp-edged  ribs . The recessed circular areoles located on them are gray and are up to 1.2 centimeters apart. Yellowish gray to yellow thorns arise from them . The single, downward central spine is 4 to 5 inches long. The eight to ten spread radial spines have a length of 0.4 to 1.2 centimeters.

The funnel-shaped, white flowers appear near the shoot tips and open during the day. They are 19 to 20 centimeters long and up to 10 centimeters in diameter. The spherical fruits have a diameter of 4 to 5 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Echinopsis taratensis is common in the Bolivian department of Cochabamba in the municipality of Tarata at altitudes of 3200 meters.

The first description as Trichocereus taratensis by Martín Cárdenas was published in 1966. Heimo Friedrich and Gordon Douglas Rowley placed the species in 1974 in the genus Echinopsis .
