The real coral tree ( Erythrina corallodendron ) is a type of plant from the genus of coral trees ( Erythrina ) in the subfamily of the butterflies (Faboideae). As a common German name , only the term coral tree is sometimes used.

The real coral tree grows as a deciduous tree . The leaves are pinnate.

The real coral tree is native to tropical Central America , but is also found in other tropical regions, such as Cochinchina , Tahiti and Mauritius .
Toxicity and Ingredients
The real coral tree is considered poisonous. There is an alkaloid in the bark , which is probably identical to that of Erythrina broteroi . The seeds of the real coral tree are strikingly red. They are said to have a hallucinogenic effect.

The real coral tree is planted as a shade tree in cocoa plantations . In Tahiti, the bark is used medicinally as an astringent . In Mauritius it is used as a sedative and hypnotic .
