The Eckernförder place is crossed by paths grove in Berlin district of Wedding ( Mitte district ) in the form of a triangle. The place has an area of 3.6  hectares .

The facility is bordered by Sylter Strasse, Seestrasse and the Berlin-Spandauer Schifffahrtskanal . The Westhafen is on the other bank of the shipping canal . On the other side of Seestrasse are the green spaces around Plötzensee , on the other side of Sylter Strasse the park-like grounds of the Rudolf Virchow Clinic . Together with these green spaces, the Goethe Park and the Rehberge Park, Eckernförde Platz is part of a larger green area.

history

The square was created through the construction of the Berlin-Spandau shipping canal from 1848 to 1856, which bordered the wet meadows and pine forests that were previously there . As the city of Berlin continued to grow to the north, this area was also opened up. The streets that form the boundaries of the square today were created.

Eckernförde Platz has been named after the Ostseebad Eckernförde since January 9, 1901 . Linden trees were planted in the north in the course of the construction of the space . The remaining vegetation of the square has been changed again and again through various conversions over time.

At first, the square was used as an excursion area for Berliners. Between 1898 and 1907 a restaurant operated by Ida Hoppe, a shooting gallery and an event hall was built on Seestrasse / corner of the north bank, and a summer stage and music pavilions were added later. These only took up a small part of the space. From 1905 onwards, the city of Berlin used the greater part as a stone storage area, on which numerous service buildings such as steam roller sheds and warehouses were gradually built.

Bunker remains of the water police

The first conversion took place in 1927, when parts of the site went to private tenants, who used the space next to the port primarily for handicrafts and small-scale industry. From 1927 to 1936 storage sheds, horse stables, plasterboard production and a forge were built. The amusement facility that was still in existence received additional parking spaces. In 1936 the National Socialists planned a “dignified” redesign of the square and therefore terminated the private tenants. The Second World War prevented the renovation. A deep bunker for the water police has been preserved from this time.

After the Second World War, the campsite was still in use. In addition, the water police set up a location here.

The square was given its present form in 1956. The Uferstraße that led to the square was no longer a street. The square should now primarily serve the recreation. Paths were laid out under Günther Rieck and the area by the canal was planted with trees. A short-term playground was soon dismantled because it was not used.

use

The main part of the square is taken up by a grove, which is composed mainly of tall deciduous trees .

Reversing loop of the tram

The sandstone sculpture Orpheus with animals by Ernst Herter from 1902 is a part of a formerly built fountain at the University of Fine Arts . As early as 1990, however, the plastic was certified to be “very badly damaged and weathered”. A turning loop of the tram protrudes into the north corner of Eckernförde Platz. This was built in 1997 and is at the end of the route from Bornholmer Strasse to Seestrasse. It is the first tram to be built in the former West Berlin after reunification .

The Berlin – Copenhagen cycle path runs along the square on the bank .
