Ectozoma pavonii is a species of plant inthe nightshade family (Solanaceae). It is the only species in the genus Ectozoma .

description

Vegetative characteristics

Ectozoma pavonii is a 2 to 3 m high shrub or a climbing plant up to 15 m high that arises from a woody, ball-shaped scrub with a diameter of 40 cm. The rungs are hairless.

The leaf blades of the leaves are thick, leathery and broadly ovate, (rarely 5) 8 to 12 (18) cm long and (2.5) 4.5 to 6 (9) cm wide. The base is blunt, the tip tapering to a point. They stand on short (4) 8 to 15 (22) mm long petioles.

Inflorescences and flowers

The both terminal and axillary, loose panicle inflorescences consist of zymous partial inflorescences . The fragrant flowers are thick and stand on short, 4 to 6 mm long flower stalks. The bell-shaped calyx is 7 to 12 (18) mm long and covered with simple, two- to seven-cell trichomes and protrudes slightly over the corolla tube. The five calyx teeth are triangular, elongated and as long or slightly shorter than the calyx tube. The crown is 10 to 14 mm long and colored greenish-yellow, green or whitish. The corolla tube is slightly funnel-shaped, except for a short cylindrical section at the lower end. The five corolla lobes are almost circular, wider than they are long and about 1/3 the length of the corolla tube.

The stamens are slightly above the crown, are fixed about the lower quarter of the corolla tube. The stamens are very short and compressed, the base of all stamens is united to a half-high standing ring, whose inward-facing surface is densely covered with trichomes. The fixed at the rear of the dust bag are tapered, the two theca are not confluent, but are available only in a small proximal (celebrity paint) area separate from each other. The pollen is medium-sized with a diameter of 35 to 40 µm.

The ovary is bilobed and two-chambered and conical in shape. The nectaries are raised a little. The 5 to 6 mm long stylus is straight, the slightly raised stigma almost spherical-head-shaped, slightly indented and bilobed.

Fruits and seeds

The fruits are almost spherical, indented berries that protrude a little over the permanent calyx. The boomerang-shaped seeds are 2.2 to 2.5 mm long, but the side on which the hilum is located is straight rather than concave. The cotyledons are a little longer than they are wide, about the same width as the rest of the embryo, but this is two to three times longer. The endosperm is quite abundant.

Occurrence

The only species of the genus Ectozoma grows endemically in the rainforests of the foothills of Ecuador and Peru at altitudes between 200 and 800 m.

Systematics

The genus is close to the Juanulloa , but differs from them by the smaller flowers in the umbellate inflorescences, the overgrown stamens and the shape of the stigma. Furthermore, the shape of the embryo in the seed distinguishes the two genera.
