Ed Cassidy

Edward Claude "Ed" Cassidy , nicknamed Mr. Skin (* 4. May 1923 in Chicago , Illinois ; † 6. December 2012 in San Jose , California ) was an American jazz - and rock - drummer . In 1967 he was one of the founders of the rock group Spirit .

Live and act

Cassidy was born in a rural area outside of Chicago. His family moved to Bakersfield, California in 1931 . Cassidy began his career as a professional musician in 1937. He served in the US Navy during World War II . After his release, he frequently changed jobs before becoming a full-time musician. He worked in show bands , Dixieland combos, country and western bands and played soundtracks for films. He also made a quick visit to the San Francisco Opera .

Cassidy played in the 1950s with jazz greats such as Art Pepper , Cannonball Adderley , Thelonious Monk , Gerry Mulligan and Zoot Sims . With Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder he founded the band Rising Sons in 1964 and the Red Roosters in 1965 . With his stepson Randy California, Cassidy formed the band Spirit in Los Angeles in 1967 , with whom he recorded fourteen albums by 1996. In 1978 he performed with this band at the WDR- Rockpalast in Essen's Grugahalle .

From the mid-1970s, Cassidy also worked as an actor, including live improvisations and appearances in the television series General Hospital and in films.

Cassidy was married twice and had one daughter. He died on December 6, 2012 at the age of 89 in San Jose, California.
