The EDEKABANK AG is a universal bank and a subsidiary of Edeka -Verbundes based in Edeka House in the City-Nord in Hamburg .

The bank is the central financing institute for Edeka retail and is active in the private customer business as a direct bank with online and telephone advice.

Edekabank was founded on November 9, 1914 in Berlin in order to secure access to the capital market for the cooperative members of the Edeka group even in the crisis of the First World War. The financing of Edeka retailers and start-ups within the Edeka group is still the bank's core business today.

Edekabank is a member of the Federal Association of German Volksbanks and Raiffeisenbanks and is part of the security scheme of the cooperative financial group, which guarantees comprehensive protection of customer deposits.

With total assets of around 2.8 billion euros as of December 31, 2019, Edekabank is one of the 100 largest credit institutions in the cooperative banking network.

Edekabank arranges industrial insurance and company legal protection insurance as well as private risk insurance for entrepreneurs through its subsidiary Edeka Versicherungsdienst Vermittlungs-GmbH.

With Edeka Leasing GmbH, Edekabank offered leasing models for retail-specific goods such as cash registers and cooling systems through to complete store equipment.

Retail banking

Edekabank mainly serves private customers via the Internet and telephone. In addition, a branch with a customer hall and consultation rooms was operated in the Hamburg headquarters until the closure on November 18, 2016. When the counter was closed, the locker system was converted to self-service mode.

The Edekabank portfolio includes all of the usual services and products in the areas of payment transactions, investments and financing. Edekabank offers a free current account (Edeka account) with a refund of 1% on purchases at Edeka (up to a maximum of 50 euros per year). For the company's centenary in 2014, Edekabank increased the reimbursement to 2% (up to a maximum of 100 euros per year). Edekabank customers can withdraw cash free of charge from over 19,000 ATMs in the cooperative Bankcard service network.
