EDEKA Südbayern Handels Stiftung & Co. KG is one of the seven regional companies of the EDEKA Group, based in the Upper Bavarian community of Gaimersheim near Ingolstadt . It is a cooperatively structured company with a total annual turnover of more than 4.69 billion euros in 2017. The company's territory extends across the entire southern Bavarian region and districts in the southeast of Baden-Württemberg .

Company history

The predecessor of today's EDEKA Südbayern was a merger of several food merchants to form cooperatives . Thus, on October 21, 1902, the "Purchasing Cooperative of Colonial Goods Dealers in Trostberg eGmbH" and on October 12, 1919 the "Purchasing Association of Colonial Goods Dealers Ingolstadt and Surroundings eGmbH" were founded. After overcoming the global economic crisis , triggered by Black Friday 1929, and the destruction of the first own warehouse and administration building by a bomb attack towards the end of the Second World War in 1945, construction work began in 1962 on an administration and storage building on the green meadow of Ingolstädter Strasse in Gaimersheim , which is still the seat of the EDEKA Südbayern headquarters. The first in-house meat products company was founded in 1972, which is now represented by Südbayerischen Fleischwaren GmbH. From 1980 onwards the company merged with other companies in the southern Bavarian region: 1981 with EDEKA Regensburg eG, 1990 with Edeka Handelsgesellschaft Oberbayern mbH and 1994 with Edeka Handelsgesellschaft Penzberg-Kempten mbH. The Westpark shopping center (Ingolstadt) was opened in 1996, in which EDEKA Südbayern still holds 82.5%. In 1997, the Backstube Wünsche GmbH, based in Gaimersheim, was acquired. With the merger of the two original companies from Trostberg and Ingolstadt, Edeka Handelsgesellschaft Südbayern mbH was founded in 2003. In 2005, the group of companies was expanded again by opening around 250 spar stores in 2005. After the partial takeover of the Kaiser's Tengelmann group with 172 stores, a warehouse in Eching and the Birkenhof meat factory in Donauwörth in 2017, today's EDEKA Südbayern Handels Stiftung & Co. KG has a sales area of over 1 million m².
